Oklahoma Roofer Registry - Online Directory of Qualified Roofing Contractors

By , About.com Guide

Unfortunately, severe weather is a part of life in Oklahoma, just something we're used to. From tornadoes and high winds to hail and lightning, not only does it make for some interesting spring seasons but also higher home insurance costs. When severe weather strikes, it's not uncommon to have roof damage, and recent years have seen scores of roofing contractors, some less than reputable, flooding in from other states to capitalize on the business.
In June 2010, though, the state of Oklahoma signed into law the Roofing Contractor Registration Act, requiring all roofers to register and provide insurance information. It is not a licensing program like some other industries, but it is nevertheless a valuable tool for consumers. So don't simply hire the first person that knocks on your door after an Oklahoma storm. Here is information on how to find, search and understand the Oklahoma roofer registry.

Oklahoma Construction Industries Board:

Supervising registration and complaints for the Oklahoma roofer registry is the Construction Industries Board, the state agency in charge of licensing and inspection for trades such as home inspection, contractors, plumbers and electricians. The agency's website is located at ok.gov/cib, and office contact information is:

2401 NW 23rd Street, Suite 2F
Oklahoma City, OK 73107
(405) 521-6550

Search the Online Roofing Contractor Database:

Oklahoma roofer registration information is available in three PDF documents. You'll find the same information in each, but they are organized differently. In addition to providing contact information for each registered roofer, the list includes a registration end date as well as a "Status" column, which designates each as "In Good Standing" or "Not In Good Standing." The latter indicates those you generally want to avoid. Also, some registrations are listed as "pending."

Filing a Complaint:

Do you have a grievance about a roofer doing business in Oklahoma? If so, file a complaint with the state. The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board accepts complaints for actions such as abandonment of contract, fraud, working without a valid registration, damage or injury. Roofers are offered the opportunity to respond in writing to complaints before they are turned over to the District Attorney's office for investigation. Registering:

If you're a roofing contractor in the state of Oklahoma, you must register with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board or risk a misdemeanor charge and fine of up to $500. Registration is required annually, and in addition to a registration fee, contractors must submit qualifications, proof of at least $500,000 in liability insurance and proof of workers' compensation coverage or exemption.
