Many have ditched waiting in line at the video store and paying as much as $5.00 for a DVD rental for easier methods such as online rental subscriptions. Well, now a company called Redbox has opened self-service kiosks all around Oklahoma City where you can rent a DVD as quickly as you can buy a soda at a vending machine.
Here's information on the company as well as locations where you can find a Redbox kiosk near you.
Who is Redbox?
Redbox is an Illinois-based company that is expanding throughout the United States, pioneering a new, easier and far cheaper method of renting DVDs. As of February 2007, they had over 2000 of their vending machine-style kiosks all around the country. Largely owned by McDonald's and Coinstar, Redbox has added Oklahoma City as one of their areas of concentration. The company estimates they'll have over 75 in the metro area by the end of March 2007.
How does a Redbox work?
Quite a bit like a vending machine actually. As you can see by the accompanying picture, the kiosks have a touchscreen where you select from about 80 DVD options. Customers pay by sliding a credit or debit card, and the DVD drops right out for you. You can then return the DVD to any Redbox location nationwide when you're finished. Simple as that.
How much does it cost?
Your card is charged $1.00 for each day you keep the DVD. If the DVD isn't returned in 25 days, your card is charged $25.00 and you no longer need to return the movie. It's yours to keep. There are no late fees or video store employees calling to tell you the movie is late.
Can I get the brand new movies?
Sure can. The 80 available titles are all new release movies. In fact, Redbox will have the big hits every Tuesday release day. Although you always have to worry about a movie being all checked out, Redbox even allows you to check inventory and reserve DVDs online through their official site. You then just pick the DVD up at the kiosk.
