Looking for pizza that's better than the big chains around the Oklahoma City area? While Mazzio's, Pizza Hut and the like aren't without their charms, you have plenty of other options for fantastic pizza in OKC. My Great Pizza Search has led me to rank the best pizza in the metro.
Disclaimer: Despite my best stomach-stretching efforts, I wasn't able to try every recommendation I received. So, this list is subject to change if I find a pizza place just too good to leave out.
1. Hideaway Pizza
Hideaway has 3 metro locations:
- Edmond - (405) 348-4777
- Norman - (405) 292-4777
- N. Western Avenue - (405) 840-4777
2. Jo's Famous Pizza
Jo's is the perfect example of my very reason for taking on the metro pizza search. Located south of Norman, just off I-35 in Purcell, it is a true gem of a pizza place. With the atmosphere of a good old-fashioned, small town pizza parlor, Jo's serves their piping hot, pie crust-encased pizzas on cardboard rounds. It's definitely worth the drive.Jo's Famous Pizza - (405) 527-2379
3. Sophabella's Chicago Grill
There are pizza partisans who only want "Chicago Style" or "New York Style." Well, in Oklahoma City I didn't find many places to fit that unique, packed-full pizza with flaky crust and sauce on top one associates with Chicago. But one I did find does it quite well. Sophabella's isn't just a pizza place; they're a restaurant with Italian and American entrees. If you go, though, you might want to try the "Chicago Seven."Sophabella's Chicago Grill - (405) 879-0100
4. J-Town Pizza
Another small town gem, J-Town is located in Jones, just a few miles northeast of OKC. Owned by a former New Yorker and NFL player, J-Town has some delicious New York-style pizza. The traditional thin, almost buttery crust and loads of cheese is done really well here, particularly if you eat it there.J-Town Pizza - (405) 399-3320
5. Bellini's Ristorante
I had been to Bellini's several times, even naming it to my Top Unique Restaurants list, so I was surprised when I received several recommendations for their pizza. I had tried it long ago but never thought of it during my search. So I tried it again. This certainly isn't your typical "call in a pizza" type of place, but with a great thin crust and slightly browned cheese, it's worthy of inclusion here.Bellini's Ristorante and Grill - (405) 848-1065
6. New York Pizza
I had several Norman-area recommendations, but New York Pizza was one of the first I tried. Located on Campus Corner, it's a college-town favorite. And for good reason. Placed upon an elevated rack on my table, the pizza was a great example of that famous New York style. The sauce is a bit subdued, with a tomato and garlic taste, but the pizza nevertheless stood up as one of the better I tried in the metro.New York Pizza - (405) 360-1515
7. Hemi's Pizza & Grill
It seems many visitors were convinced Hemi's wasn't around anymore. I got several e-mails mentioning them but adding something like, "But I think they closed down." Well, they didn't. In fact, there are two locations. The pizza I sampled for the search didn't have as much sauce on it as I would've liked, but if you like lots of toppings, thick construction and great flavor, Hemi's should be on your list.N. Classen - (405) 528-6444 NW 23rd - (405) 528-4343
8. Sicilian Pizza Cafe
Located on Memorial Road, Sicilian was recommended to me as being owned and operated by native Italians. I didn't really try to verify that, largely because it doesn't much matter to me. I suppose an Italian can make pizza I don't like just as much as anyone else. But Sicilian Pizza Cafe does it well, Italian ownership or not. With some nice spicy meat toppings, it surpasses most of the bland pizzas out there.Sicilian Pizza Cafe - (405) 752-9100
9. Falcone's Pizzeria and Deli
If you like that classic New York style where one big, thin slice will fill you up, you can't get much more authentic than Falcone's. Run by Dan Falcone, quite a friendly guy who was born and raised in New York City, the restaurant has exploded in popularity since opening its 2nd location, this one in Bricktown. I tried Falcone's early on in my pizza hunt and thought it was very good. I tried it again recently, and I realized I couldn't leave it off this list. Large pies can be a bit pricier than some other places, but you can also get it by the slice.6705 N May - (405) 242-2222
Bricktown - (405) 702-1500
10. The Garden Pizza
Alright, I'm cheating a bit with this one, but hey it's my top 10. Garden doesn't have the best pizza around and probably wouldn't be on the list strictly for that, but there are two things that make it worth mentioning for me. The first is the unique sauce taste. In this Pizza Search, I've found too often that so many places just taste the same and sauce tastes store-bought. Garden is a nice exception. In addition, the calzone really impressed me.The Garden Pizza - (405) 330-0088
