Ted's Cafe Escondido

About.com Rating 4.5

By Adam Knapp, About.com

The Bottom Line

Ted's has long been one of the more popular Tex-Mex restaurants in Oklahoma City, expanding around the metro and even outside of it to the Tulsa area. It consistently wins resident-voted awards for best Mexican food thanks to great fajitas, friendly service and comfortable atmosphere, among other attributes. Make no mistake, though. Popular means often long waits and a bit higher prices.

Pros

  • Excellent, friendly service
  • Casual and relaxed Tex-Mex atmosphere
  • Large portion sizes
  • Especially tasty tortillas and fajitas

Cons

  • Slightly higher priced that some other Tex-Mex restaurants

  • Dining area often loud and crowded

Guide Review - Ted's Cafe Escondido

There's an interesting phenomenon with Ted's Cafe Escondido. Go to any of the metro locations and you'll see quite clearly it's one of the more popular spots, if not the most popular, for Tex-Mex food in Oklahoma City. And while it always seems to win media awards to that fact, there's also a vocal group that considers it all "hype," overrated and overpriced.

As you can see from my Top OKC Restaurants list, I fall more into the former camp than the latter. While I can understand it not quite living up to the pronouncements of many enthusiastic OKC residents, it is still not likely to disappoint.

On my first visit many years ago, the manager came to my table after a lengthy wait and asked whether I'd been to Ted's before. When I told him I had not, he offered me a specialty dish on the house. Now I'm sure this isn't an everyday occurrence, but it underscores one important point about Ted's. You'll almost assuredly find excellent service and a friendly staff.

In a casual, though usually crowded and loud, dining area, Ted's offers Tex-Mex staples, and all of them are good. The tortillas are some of the best you'll find, and the portions are large enough to make one ignore the slightly higher than average prices.

Don't go to Ted's expecting a revelation in Mexican food as some of the "hype" might suggest because you probably won't find it. You'll wait for a table in all likelihood but get one of the better Tex-Mex experiences in town.
