Oklahoma Sooners

The Oklahoma Sooners finished the regular season at 11-2 as the Big 12 Champions after beating Nebraska 21-7 in the Championship game. Coached by the Big 12 Coach of the Year, Bob Stoops, Oklahoma rebounded from early adversity to finish ranked 7th in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 8th in the Associated Press Poll. They are 10th in the BCS rankings.

The team's offense ranks 46th in the NCAA in total yards with 372.5 gained per game while the defense is 17th in total yards allowed with 280.6 per game.

This season Oklahoma defeated UAB and Washington before the now-famous Oregon officiating mistakes cost them the game against the Ducks. Their only legitimate loss was to Texas, a 28-10 defeat at the Cotton Bowl. From that point, they went undefeated through their Big 12 schedule that included Iowa State, Colorado, Missouri, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Nebraska.

Key offensive players for Oklahoma include Adrian Peterson, one of the nation's best collegiate players who was injured midway through the year. He is expected to play along with his back-up Alan Patrick. The two combined for 1635 yards rushing and 14 TDs in 2006. Quarterback Paul Thompson threw for 2434 yards and 20 touchdowns with only 8 interceptions, and his favorite target is Malcolm Kelly. Kelly is just short of 1000 yards receiving on the year and has 10 touchdown grabs.

Key defensive players include the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, linebacker Rufus Alexander, who leads Oklahoma with 101 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss. Safety Reggie Smith, also a gamebreaker on special teams, has 3 interceptions on the year, one of which he returned for a touchdown.
