About El Reno:
An Oklahoma City area town rich in history, El Reno was originally called "Reno City" and was located along the North Canadian River, several miles north of its current spot. Built in 1874, Fort Reno was named in honor of Gen. Jesse L. Reno, a classmate of the fort's first commander Lt. General Philip Sheridan and a casualty of the Civil War. Flooding from the river forced the move south, and the city was chartered in 1889. El Reno boasts 11 properties and 2 areas on the National Register of Historic Places.
Spanning about 80 square miles west of Oklahoma City, the small historic community is well-known for its annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, which takes place the first Saturday in May, and is home to a federal prison, Redlands Community College, Lake El Reno and much more.
Location:
El Reno is located west of Oklahoma City off I-40. Route 66 goes through El Reno, meeting North/South Highway 81. The city stretches west beyond Country Club Rd., north beyond Jones Rd., and east beyond Shepherd Avenue. Major city streets include Elm Street, Choctaw Avenue and Sunset Drive.
Demographics:
The population of El Reno is just over 16,000, about 76 percent of which are Caucasian, according to the 2000 census. Nearly 10 percent of the population is Native American, and 7.52 percent is Hispanic/Latino. Median household income as of 2007 was just under $40,000, only slightly below the state average, and the median home value is $87,867, about $5,000 less than the state average.
