Overview:
A public 4-year institution, the University of Central Oklahoma is the state's 3rd largest behind the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. It is also one of the state's oldest, founded as the "Territorial Normal School" in December of 1890 and has known many names. Just before statehood, the school was renamed Central State Normal School, then Central State Teachers College in 1919. From 1939 to 1971, it was known as Central State College before becoming Central State University until 1990.
Notable alumni include 2007 Miss America Lauren Nelson, NFL players Keith Traylor and Joe Aska, NBA player Eddie Robinson, rock band Hinder, former FEMA director Michael D. Brown and actress Milena Govich.
Location:
The University of Central Oklahoma is located on 40 acres Edmond, a large suburb north of Oklahoma City. The campus is just north of Edmond Road, also known as 2nd street, and includes more than 20 academic buildings, 5 residence halls, and more than 10 other buildings.
Academics:
UCO currently offers more than 130 degree options in 6 colleges: Arts, Media & Design, Business Administration, Liberal Arts, Education and Professional Services, Mathematics and Science, and Graduate Studies. Both Bachelor and Master-level degrees are available, and the university recently added a Master of Fine Arts, a terminal degree.
The school is well-known as a teacher-producing institution and has also been honored for its Physics department. UCO is the only university in Oklahoma that offers a degree in Forensic Science, and the UCO Jazz Lab is a popular spot for live music in OKC.
