Oklahoma City is On a Diet

Mayor Mick Cornett Presents Oklahoma City Weight Challenge

By , About.com Guide

Mayor Mick Cornett made national news in early January of 2008 as he "put Oklahoma City on a diet." Challenging Oklahoma City residents to lose a million pounds, Cornett touted his plan as part of an ongoing effort to fight the metro's status as one of the more overweight cities in the nation.

As part of the challenge, Oklahoma City is offering a website that gives residents nutrition and exercise tips, networking opportunities and the ability to track their weight loss. Here are details on the program and how to be a part of it.

The "OKC Million" website is located at both ThisCityIsGoingOnADiet.com and OKCMillion.com. Joining is free and confidential, and it requires only a first name, zip code and e-mail address. Everyone is encouraged to join the challenge.

Those registering for the program receive the following advantages:
  • Personal page allows participants to track weight loss progress and calculate body mass index (BMI)
  • Extensive resources on nutrition, meal-planning, exercise, medical programs and surgical options
  • Details on upcoming exercise-related events around the metro
Have you joined the OKC Million challenge? If so, how much weight have you lost? Discuss your progress and activities with other OKC residents on the About.com Forum
