I recently wrote a piece for a magazine in which I discussed the state economy. In the process of researching, I was fortunate enough to interview an amazing collection of business leaders, policy-makers and individuals shaping the future of the Oklahoma economic landscape. I was surprised how similarly they all answered questions regarding the future, and one theme continued to arise throughout. In order to flourish in the coming years, Oklahoma City and other Oklahoma towns must begin to emphasize the high-tech skills in education.
The Oklahoma Commerce Department recently co-sponsored a conference that focused on this very topic. One of the important points to come out of this conference was that Oklahoma has a difficult task ahead as many Oklahoma workers aren't prepared for the highly skilled jobs that are already beginning to appear in Oklahoma City and beyond. The time is now to continually reiterate the importance of such education.
See, Oklahoma is thought of very favorable by companies who may be looking to relocate. The regulations and taxes are reasonable, much more so than some other states, and the cost of living is relatively low. The workforce is known nationally as one of the more loyal and hardworking. And these are qualities businesses look at when considering investment in a region. In some opinions, the only major impediment to an outburst of economic activity is the education of the Oklahoma workforce.
So, what can be done? Well, it starts with you. If you're starting your educational pursuits, consider a path in a high-tech field or at the very least make sure you have a firm handle on computer skills. If you're considering a career change in your life, this might be the way to go. The income levels for high-tech jobs are much higher than others and the opportunities more abundant.
Many at the conference spoke of necessary education reforms in the city and the state. Those reforms may very well be necessary. But the opportunities at colleges and technical schools around the metro exist for those wishing to train themselves in these crucial high-tech skills. Check out some of the technical institutes like
DeVry,
Francis Tuttle and
Metro Tech. Peruse the technical departments at the
colleges and universities.
You may just find yourself in a rewarding and satisfying career while at the same time improving the image and economic status of Oklahoma.
