Homelessness in Oklahoma City - Voucher Program Gives True Assistance

Program Details

By Adam Knapp, About.com

With the goal of cutting down on panhandling and providing true assistance to the homeless or unfortunate, the OKC Homeless Alliance partnered with Downtown OKC to create Project: Real Change.

The program is relatively simple. Those wishing to help the homeless can purchase vouchers rather than handing over their cash. These vouchers are good for food and shelter, along with a bus ticket to one of the downtown homeless shelters. Those redeeming a voucher are provided a trip to the City Rescue Mission, Grace Rescue Mission or the Salvation Army.

It is a way to ensure that your assistance is put to the proper use.

Cost and Where to Buy

Books of five "Real Change" vouchers are sold for only $5 and also includes tips on how to handle a begging situation in the effort of combating panhandling.

Vouchers are currently available:
  • Online at www.homelessalliance.org
  • The Downtown Transit Center at 420 NW 5th
  • The Oklahoma City Offices at 420 W. Main Street
  • City Hall at 200 N. Walker Avenue
