Waste, Trash and Recycling in Oklahoma City

By

In charge of trash pickup in Oklahoma City is the Solid Waste Management Division. Here are some common questions regarding trash pickup, bulk pickup, schedules and recycling in OKC.

Where do I put my trash?

If you live within the Oklahoma City limits, you probably already have a "Big Blue" can at your home. The Solid Waste Management Division will not collect trash left at the curb in any other kind of commercial trash can since they utilize the mechanical arms on the trucks.

What if I need a 2nd "Big Blue?"

When one trash can is simply not enough, don't fear. There is no additional charge for a 2nd "Big Blue." Simply call (405) 297-2833.

What if I have more garbage than will fit in my 2 cans?

All you need to do is make sure the waste is tied well in plastic trash bags. Waste Management will collect plastic bags at the curb alongside 2 full cans.

What about cut grass or other yard waste?

See above. If both of your "Big Blue" cans are full, simply place lawn clippings, etc. in a tied plastic bag at the curb.

I have a couch, appliance, large tree limb, etc. that I need picked up. What do I do?

Oklahoma City offers bulk waste pickup for these kinds of items, really anything that won't fit in your "Big Blue." The service is once a month, and there is no extra charge as long as you don't exceed the size of about 2 refrigerators a month. You can find out the pickup day for your neighborhood by checking your utility bill or viewing this online map.

Is there anything special I need to do with an item for bulk pickup?

Not really. You'll place it in your usual curbside trash spot, but the city asks that you put it out no more than 3 days before the bulk pickup so that your neighbors don't have to stare at it for long. Special arrangements must be made by calling (405) 297-2833 for appliances containing freon. You can see a list of allowable and excluded items online.

What about pickup on holidays?

There is no pickup on the following national holidays: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Schedule adjustments are typically published in the newspaper the week of the holiday. In general, Monday holidays are rescheduled for Wednesday pickup while Christmas simply pushes pickup back a day.

Does Oklahoma City provide recycling services?

You bet. You can obtain a "Little Blue" recycling can by calling (405) 297-2833. The city accepts recyclables such as plastic milk or beverage containers, aluminum cans, glass jars and bottles, and newspapers/magazines.
