The Oklahoma City suburb of El Reno is known for its annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, but the city also features a small town holiday delight each year. Called Christmas on the Western Frontier, the popular event is organized by El Reno Main Street and is typically held the first Thursday of December. The downtown festivities attract a crowd of over 10,000 from El Reno and across the metro, all enjoying activities such as storytelling, caroling, a Christmas parade and more.

In 2012, El Reno's Christmas on the Western Frontier will be held on Thursday, November 29th. The event begins at 6 p.m. with the old-fashioned parade, and the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree is at 7 p.m. Activities run until 9 p.m.

The Christmas on the Western Frontier event in El Reno takes place downtown. From Oklahoma City, follow I-40 west and exit northbound on Highway 81. Route 66 also travels west from OKC, through Bethany and Yukon before merging with Highway 81 into El Reno.

For many, the highlight of Christmas on the Western Frontier is the downtown parade. The old-fashioned, themed parade starts at 6 p.m. Nearly 50 businesses, churches and organizations participate with floats. Previous years have included entries from Dance Etiquette Dancers, the El Reno Cruisers Classic Car Club, Mercy Hospital El Reno, The Salvation Army, school bands, motorcycle clubs, horse groups, elected officials and more.
