Earth Day 2009 in Oklahoma City

The Oklahoma City metro area has a number of events and activities in celebration of Earth Day 2009. Take advantage of the opportunity provided by Earth Day in Oklahoma City, a chance to recognize the positive impact we can make on our planet by pitching in.   • Little River Zoo's Kids for Kindness Earth Day Festival
    From Noon to 6 p.m. on April 19th, the festival features more than 30 community booths, encouraging children to actively protect and care for animals and the environment.

  • Earth Fest at Martin Park Nature Center
    From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 25th, the Martin Park Nature Center in NW Oklahoma City will celebrate with Earth Fest, a series of Earth-friendly educational seminars that includes "Cooking with the Sun," "Recycling Rainwater" and more.

  • Free Metro Transit
    Oklahoma City's Metro Transit system will offer free bus and trolley rides throughout the day from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on April 22nd. Bus service in Oklahoma City, Tinker AFB, Norman and Edmond is also included.

  • Bike Riding Class
    The city will hold a free bicycle riding class on the steps of City Hall on April 24th. Register for this "Brown Bag Lunch and Learn" by calling (405) 297-3908 or by email. Hang around afterward for an optional 90-minute bike ride around downtown.

  • Party for the Planet at the OKC Zoo
    From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 26th, the zoo will feature live music, giveaways, family activities and much more in observance of Earth Day. Events are included with regular zoo admission.

  • eRecycle Your Used Electronics at the State Capitol
    Sponsored by gogreen.ok.gov and benefiting charities Cell Phones for Soldiers and the AMBUCS ASK Project, the Oklahoma State Capitol will hold an erecycling event from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on April 22nd at the south entrance. Residents and businesses can donate cell phones, Pentium-level computers, color monitors, mice, keyboards, VGA or SVGA monitors, power cords, 3.5” floppy disks, hard disk drives, CD-ROM drives, motherboards and memory chips. The first 250 donors will receive a tree seedling to plant and give back to our environment, and all donors receive a tax receipt.

  • Special Hazardous Waste Collection
    The city will hold a special hazardous waste collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 25th at State Fair Park. Open to OKC residents only, the collection gives an opportunity to dispose of items such as ammunition, tires and computer equipment. Make sure to bring a current water bill stub to prove residency, and be aware that they won't accept televisions, wheels, rims and oversized tires such as equipment or farm implement tires.

  • Rethink:Recycle:Redesign
    Sustainable OKC presents the inaugural Rethink:Recycle:Redesign at 7 p.m. on April 18 at IAO Gallery (811 N. Broadway). There will be local art, music, foods and a silent auction. Get more information on the official site.

  • Earth Day Fair
    The Oklahoma City Mayfair Heights United Methodist Church at 3131 NW 50th Street is holding an Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 18th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to this event that features free barbeque and refreshments, free trees, a silent auction, gardening tips and displays by local sustainability and conservation organizations.
