From Olympic training to national entertainment events, the Oklahoma River continues its growth as a top Oklahoma City attraction. It will also now be the home of the National Drag Boat Association, a 50 year-old organization that sanctions racing events in cities throughout the country, including the popular OKC Nationals event each June. Previously, the NDBA had been affiliated with the Southern Drag Boat Association, based in Austin.
Mike McAuliffe, President & CEO of the NDBA and OKC Motorsports, pointed to multiple reasons for the move, river attributes such as convenient fan viewing and the river's recess, which creates a natural wind screen. "The race teams also like Oklahoma City's central location, easy highway access, affordable hotels near the race site and the fact the site is in walking distance to the Bricktown Entertainment District," he said.
A new full race series will be added in 2014, and it is set to feature two additional races in OKC, including a September USA National Championship Race.
