I've written about many, many internet and magazine rankings over the years, topics ranging from the state educational system to Oklahoma City's romantic propensities. Often, the lists are just for fun, mere conversation fodder with flawed (at best) methodologies. They aren't taken too seriously. And perhaps this is a reason why. After several years of being ranked as one of the "fattest cities in America" by Men's Fitness magazine, Oklahoma City has apparently done a complete turnaround and is now ranked as the 23rd "fittest city" in the U.S. Well, okay...
Now, don't get me wrong. No doubt improvements are being made. And remember, this is the same ranking that prompted Mayor Cornett's million pound diet challenge for OKC residents, a successful initiative that earlier this year marked the achievement of its lofty goal. Combined with the additions of bike paths and trails around the metro, healthier meals in schools and improvements to parks, things are headed in the right direction. But even Cornett admitted cautious optimism, saying "We still have room for improvement and I think it's probably going to take a decade to really change behaviors."
