This Friday, March 11th, the Oklahoma City Zoo will open a new $13 million dollar elephant habitat. The largest exhibit ever built at the zoo, it spans nine and a half acres and was funded by Oklahoma City sales tax and private donations. Zoo officials are calling it "one of the top elephant habitats in the country."
Not only is it big, the state-of-the-art exhibit is designed to give zoo visitors an up-close look at the majestic creatures. There are three outdoor yards, pools, a waterfall and a barn that allows views into it from a raised boardwalk. In addition, a demonstration pavilion that seats over 400 will showcase daily routines such as baths, foot care and training sessions. The zoo has photos of the facility online.
