There are a couple of big annual events in Oklahoma City this weekend, none bigger than the 23rd Annual Red Earth Festival at the Cox Convention Center through Sunday. Featuring over 1,200 American Indian artists and dancers that represent more than 100 Indian nations, tribes and bands from across the country, the event is a three-day festival celebrating the Native American culture. The parade hits the downtown streets on Friday, the "Red Earth Run" takes place on Saturday, and the exhibits and dance competitions run throughout the weekend.Even though there's plenty of controversy surrounding this next event, there's little doubt a number of metro residents will make their way to the Oklahoma River for the OKC Nationals Drag Boat Races. With a new organizer, the re-branded drag boat racing event runs Friday through Sunday, an early part of Navy Week 2009.
In sports, the Redhawks are only in town for one night this weekend as they wrap up a series with Memphis on Friday before embarking on a road trip that will keep the team away from the Brick until mid-June. And while the Women's College World Series has concluded, there's still some great softball action at ASA National Softball Hall of Fame Stadium. See the official site for more information on this weekend's "12 and Under Hall of Fame Tournament."
In music, the fantastic concerts continue at the Zoo Amphitheatre. REO Speedwagon and Styx are in concert Saturday night. Get venue and ticket information here on About.com. The Guess Who will be at Frontier City on Saturday. And check out the all-female indie/pop trio Tribella at the Red Cup Sunday. Get more information about the group and hear some of their stuff on the official site.
Also, the Sunday Twilight Concert Series, courtesy of the Arts Council of Oklahoma City, kicks off this weekend with OKC rock band Built for Speed. The free concerts throughout the summer take place at the Myriad Botanical Gardens.
Finally, with pony rides, staged gunfights and more, Yukon's Annual Chisholm Trail Roundup takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Kilpatrick Family Farm. A new addition this year is a "Taste of Louisiana," featuring a Crawfish Festival. For more information, call (405) 350-8937.
