Three OKC Pools Closing

Sunday May 3, 2009
Summer afternoons spent lounging beside the local community pool, a vivid childhood memory for many of us, may soon be a thing of the past in Oklahoma City. Due in part to high costs of operation, said to be nearly $30,000 each summer, the city will close three swimming pools this season: Douglass, Macklanburg and Schilling.

Instead, more focus will be placed on the increasingly popular spraygrounds, parks with interactive water cannons, levers and buckets. Average attendance at OKC spraygrounds last year was more than double that of the traditional pools, and the cost to this city is significantly less. So nostalgia aside, I suppose the movement from pools to spraygrounds is a prudent one.
