Devon Tower Still in Plans
Thursday October 16, 2008
Some of the nation's financial woes have begun to creep into Oklahoma. For example, Chesapeake Energy's Aubrey McClendon has been forced to sell millions of company stock shares, though he later reassured that the company is "in excellent shape." Many OKC residents have wondered whether the current economic times would affect Devon Energy Corp.'s plans for an incredible $750 million downtown tower.Well, worry not. The answer is a resounding "No" from Devon Chief Executive Larry Nichols. According to Nichols, the project is being funded by Devon cash rather than financing, and the company is currently working on getting approval for the final plans. Construction is set to begin in about a year.
Very good news, indeed. If you haven't seen the plans and renderings for this thing, check them out. I know based on my e-mails that many OKC residents are incredibly excited about the tower and what it represents, but some put forth a careful "believe it when they see it" philosophy.

Has anyone thought about the impact on both Downtown employees and customers when Devon Energy buys out the parking garage exclusively for Devon employees? You’re talking about hundreds of displaced employees and thousands of displaced customers, when this happens. Parking is already a problem for Downtown OKC and now Devon wants to make sure it’s just not their employee’s problem. I believe the parking garage should stay as is, first come – first serve, and of course those who opt to pay monthly for parking.
