AC/DC's "Thunderstruck"? Garth Brooks with "Thunder Rolls"? It's easy to picture the loud pre-game theatrical possibilities at the Ford Center this fall if a report from KOCO's Mark Rodgers is correct. According to sources close to the ownership group, the metro's NBA team will be called the Oklahoma City Thunder. It will be no surprise if the team goes for a weather-related name, of course, and Thunder has certainly been tossed around as a possibility. Personally, I'm a bigger fan of names that end in "s" but I, like many Oklahomans, am just ready to give our team an identity. I suspect that regardless of the choice, it'll be mocked by commentators around the country as it will be replacing a longtime and storied franchise moniker. But that means little to me. More importantly, it's going to grow on us here in Oklahoma City, even those who don't initially like the choice, because it's ours. Boy, that still feels wonderfully strange to write.
POLL: What do you think of the name Oklahoma City Thunder?
1) I love it.
2) It's not too bad.
3) I'm not a fan
4) I hate it.
5) I'm not sure yet.
UPDATE (7/25): There still has been no official announcement regarding the team name, but the Oklahoman is reporting the NBA filed for trademark rights to six names: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshals, Thunder and Wind.
UPDATE (8/28): NBA in OKC has announced a 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 3rd press conference at which they'll unveil the team name, colors and logo. At the same time, official team merchandise will go on sale in the store at Leadership Square downtown.
UPDATE (9/3): And it's official...

I’m undecided by this choice, it’s not the most creative name but it could be worse. If they use a bison or a horse as their mascot and logo design, then Oklahomians, the league, and m will accept the name; however, I can see them making it cheesy and semi-proish.
I love how the stolen team will have a very un-NBAish team name. Good job Clay, great work.
I love how Jeff thinks Supersonics is somehow an “NBAish name”(whatever that means). Seriously? Supersonics? In what universe does that sound like a good name?
By the way, how does it feel to get beat out for the team by OKLAHOMA CITY, the 50th largest TV market? I mean, really, I live here. I’m embarrassed for you guys. Seattle must be a miserable place.
Not to mention Thuner is the name of OKC Blazers Rrival team The Wichita Thunder!
OKC should have done a little be research be for picking this name for the team!
What do all of blazers fans think of this name!?
Many of us will be referring to them as the OKC “Blunder.”
haha, thunder is just the sound from lightning, so this means they have gone from supersonic, faster than sound, to just sonic, only the speed of sound
The OKC Thunder sounds like a youth soccer club. The name is generic, lame, etc…
i dont mind the nickname, as long as the jerseys dont look like garbage. if ur gonna make me buy another durant jersey, let me look good wearing it.
I thought the Hornets, Raptors, and Grizzlies were bad NBA names. This beats them all by a mile. It sounds just like a WNBA or a D-League team.
I’d be pissed if I was an OKC fan. Then again what OKC fan ever dreamed they’d ever have an NBA team a year or two ago?
Did they have a “name the team” contest? I think they coulda used the fans help…and then came up w sumthin better.
Thunder will work. The Thunderbird can still be the mascot. Colors need to be right. Thunderdome can be new name of Ford Center. Cheerleaders can be ThunderCats or something like that. The name has potential, we can’t please everybody. It will grow on you.
I heard something on the Radio that the team should include the whole state. The team name should be OKLAHOMA THUNDER.
I was hoping they would have named your team something like the Outlaws, maybe something with a bit of an edge. Thunder just seems a little generic. I mean, everywhere has thunder every now and again. I like names that are closer to home, something that has to do with history.
I think they should name the team after the owner. the okc weasels.
“I like names that are closer to home (…)” Yeap, like the Memphis Grizzlies (?).
Then, what about the Oklahoma Twisters.
Thunder means you missed the lightning. Thunder is what happens after power is expelled. Thunder is just sound but no flash. Thunder is second place–lightning always comes in first. Lightning starts the fire, thunder is just a boom. Ooooo….. thunder….scary to little kids….makes ‘em run to Mommy. Someone musta used up all the marketing money buying the team….I’m sure there is a High School Business Club in the state that could come up with something better than an atmospheric fart. Oklahoma City Storm Farts … ain’t buying that jersey.
I’m sorry, but this is a great way to become the joke of the league before even playing your first game. Good Luck Thunder fans!
Being a Seattleite, this helps to soften the blow of losing our team. How did you guys break Cardinal rule number 1??? A team with no ‘s’ on the end. What is this, the WNBA, the USFL? The early 90s? Thank you. And be sure to keep a watchful eye on ESPN as you’re sure to get ripped in the very near future.
No offense intended, Graeme, but if this actually helps soften the blow of losing the team, I wonder how much the team meant to you in the first place. Personally, I don’t really care a great deal what the team name is. I just can’t wait to watch NBA games at the Ford Center again. Oh… and whatever they’re called, it can’t be worse than the Raptors, Chad.
So, is the Thunder an NBA D-League team or something? If anything, it sounds like the name of their mascot, not the team itself. That’s bush league!!
I have a better idea for the team name. I like Greyhounds. Oklahoma is one of the states that breed most of the racing greyhounds in the country. Plus the name equates with speed and finesse.
So I like it better than Thunder.
SZ
Our name is going to be a sound? Really? I liked Cyclones or Outlaws myself. Plus, need to drop the ‘City’
I plan on wearing my CHL thunder jersey to your first game
Thunder isn’t that bad, but the vocal majority will surely bitch about the name, no matter what it ends up being. One thing is for sure, it is now worse than Heat, Magic, Lakers, Clippers, Grizzlies, Spurs… well, actually, half of all NBA nicknames.
At least it doesn’t look like it will be the pansy-ass Barons or the completely unoriginal Outlaws.
how bout the Oklahoma gone in 5 years?
Oklahoma City Thunder / Seattle Storm. Welcom to the WNBA Oklahoma! What a horrible name tied to the sister team in Seattle.
@ (3) mike, Seattle isn’t on the list of “most horrible place to live on earth”, Oklahoma City is. I feel sorry for you, have the NBA team, you need it!!!
Oklahoma City Thunder / Seattle Storm. Welcom to the WNBA Oklahoma! What a horrible name tied to the sister team in Seattle.
mike, Seattle isn’t on the list of “most horrible place to live on earth”, Oklahoma City is. I feel sorry for you, have the NBA team, you need it.
What really kills me is not the name, the Thunder. It’s the fact that they even made the COLORS silver and blue. Can we copy Wichita any more than this? Seriously, make us Oklahomans look more like idiots, please. As if we don’t have a bad enough rap because of the dog sex tape lady in tulsa. Jeez, people. Get some originality.
Come on guys, the Raptors is a good name! It was wildly popular when the team first started out because of Jurassic Park, and then when that fad ended the name had already stuck. We get decent colours (Red, black, and white), with nice looking jerseys, and a pretty cool mascot.
ok, i got it!!!
the OKLAHOMA TWISTERS!!!
Maybe when the NBA give Seattle another NBA team, they will name them the Coffee – Seattle Coffee sounds about as exciting as the Oklahoma Thunder.
If the Thunder lags in the standings, plan on being called the Oklahoma Blunders.
So now there’s the Oklahoma Thunder (minor league football) and the Oklahoma City Thunder (mediocre basketball). Brilliant!
It is awkard to say, The Oklahoma City Thunder.
The average person will refer to the team as the “Thunders”.
Just you wait and see. Whatever the name, it should end in an “s”.
dude it sounds like a WNBA team…like luther said before, it should end in an “s”.
Im fine with the name except for one thing, why carry the City? Just call them the Oklahoma Thunder.
Oklahoma definatly qualifies as one of the lamest places ever, but I look forward to Cheering for the Nuggets at the Ford Center for the next year I’m stuck in this dumb redneck hillbilly imbreeding state. That should have been the team name!
We just thought we’d point out that NONE of this offical yet, can’t we wait until we know for REAL to complain? We think the Thunder is a fine name…whatever name we have it will be OUR name..that’s the important part.
For anyone complaining about the lack of the s at the end…
Utah Jazz
Great point, OKC girls, and one that definitely needs reiterating. As I said, I’m fine with the name if that’s what they choose. But right now, neither the name nor the colors have been announced and might not be for a while. It’s amazing to me how many people utilize this opportunity to bash Oklahoma, though. Frankly, I find it quite sad.
I like it. It shows fear and dominance..:) Let’s “roll in some THUNDER”!!
I love it, a minor league city getting a major league team and giving it a minor league name.
What else would you expect from a place like Oklahoma??
What a bunch of crybabies.
OKC decided Thunder was better than Supersonics and you have a problem with that? Of course you do. Understandable, but pathetic. Move on.
Thunder is OK as long as they use Thor, The Norse god of thunder as the mascot. (a large viking looking warrior who carries a large hammer).
I like the “Outsiders”. Not East or West coast, not high profile, just cool. Leather jacket Wayfarer sunglass look.
so the sister team is the storm which involves rain, lightning, wind, thunder and everthing else, while okc is only thunder, does this mean the storm are a better team? Clay bennet ruined this team, if they made an effort to keep rashard lewis, kept ray allen then with durant = a team that would of done alot better than last in western conference and a chance to make playoffs
I don’t mind the Oklahoma City Thunder. It doesn’t matter what the name is, really. Some of the names are extremely clever (Detroit Pistons, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, etc.) but most of the NBA’s names don’t match the city anymore anyway…
Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Clippers
Utah Jazz (THE WORST, WORSE THAN OKC THUNDER)
Memphis Grizzlies
Toronto Raptors (Canadian raptors, eh?)
…you get the picture.
Use a BISON for the Thunder logo and it works. Found this thread which has a tight logo of a bison head:
http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2343424
45. What about New Orleans Hornets? You don’t think of New Orleans for the hornets they have there. And another point, besides Raptors, all of the other teams have relocated
What a horrible, horrible name. Kind of like what Stanford University did in renaming their teams years ago to Cardinal. Not the bird but the color.
Basketball is stupid. All you Seattle fans:
Go Sooners! Cant wait to kick the crap out of U-Dub in Seattle in sept.
I’m not a big fan of Thunder either. I think that’s the group concensus here. And I couldn’t believe when I read they were considering “Wind”…come on, seriously?
I’m a big fan of the Barons myself. Much better than a naturally occurring phenomenon…like thunder or wind.
And why is everyone from Seattle so upset with OK? Shouldn’t you be upset with the guy who sold the team in the first place? I mean it seems like Oklahomans are to Seattlers as France is to America. What did we do?
And even though it was from a bitter Seattle fan I really thought the “Oklahoma Sexuals” was a hilarious suggestion, and very creative.
wow.. http://www.okcthunderonline.com, http://www.okcthunderbasketballonline.com
Oklahoma Sexuals
okc naders???it be like…Im very fortunate to be a nader,I would like to finish my career as a nader.lol better than thunder, tht sounds like WNBA.
or…wht bout…okc coons?got alot of racoons there…oh oh oh or okc coon dogs?Thunder..hmmm..got to be something better than thunder….Oklahoma City Super Cells!!Super sonics/super cells
If we are talking history why not the OKLAHOMA BOOMERS, or geographically speaking why not the OKLAHOMA TWISTERS, or just to piss off the seattleites how about the the OKLAHOMA QUIT YOUR CRYING YOU RAINY DAY LOSERS
“Oklahoma, one of the worst places to live?” Doesn’t Seattle have the highest suicide rate in the US? Guess they had to evacuate the team before they drank the Kool-Aid.
If you’re a now a fan of the Oklahoma City Thunder like me check out a new forum!
http://www.oklahomacitythunderforum.com
OK, first off I do not like the idea of this team being stolen from Seattle. Expecialy since they won the state of Washington it’s only championship in professional sports in exsistance today. I think an expansion team would have been a better idea for the OKC.
And I’m not a Seattle Sonics fan, I’m a Colts/Pacers fan who has nothing against the Seattle Super Sonics or the OKC Thunder.
Now, with that being said, I think the Tunders is a good name for the OKC NBA team. But personally I like the name Dust Devils better.
Hey hey: the Oklahoma City Thunder in the . . . THUNDERDOME! (Thank you. Thank you very much. You’re too kind. No, that’s enough now. Thank you.)
i think they hate the name/city is because of Hinder. lol. Honey why are you calling me, so late? or Get Stoned. same reason why the Raptors get all this crap talk for the fact Nickelback are Canadians. Seattle fans still wish it was the 90s when Grunge Rock was ruling the world. not dissing the city but c’mon. Seattle brought Grunge Rock which i hate but did produce a great rapper, Starbucks, a baseball team that can win 116 games but not even make the world series, and a football team that still are bitchin’ about whether the flags were from the refs or Terrible Towels.
Should be called the “Oklahoma Twisters” or “Oklahoma City Tornadoes.”
First of all—I like the Outlaws or Thunder for a name.Sounds kinda cool to me.
Second–There was no one more pissed off than I was, when the Sonics moved.
Third–I know having a NBA team is great, but just remember how you got them.It is a fact that CLAY had to lie/lie/lie to get his way.You have a sleeze ball for an owner.Good luck with that.it starts at the top……….
WHY should we drop the “City” from the team name? I DO NOT REMEMBER the whole state getting stuck with the TAX BILL to pay for them. ALSO if you don’t like the nake, don’t go to the games. The true fans will go no matter the name.
I agree with divax273. OKC is footing the bill. Oklahoma City THUNDER is better than some of the others names they have came up with.
You should be Called the Oklahoma “Bandits” because you stole Seattle’s Team
quick search on wikipedia……please name the team the OKC Orangutan. Joke of team, joke of city, jokes jokes jokes folks.
Oxen
Ostrich
Owl
Octopus
Opossum
Otter
Ocelot
Orangutan
Oriole
Oyster
Orca
Okapi (antelope
First, I hate the name Thunder for this team. I like Thunderbirds for our 45th Infantry division and our Native American heritage, but apparantly they’re not going with that name.
Second, I’m tired of all you ignorant douchebags who think you’re so clever. All you people making fun of Oklahoma have probably never even been here or don’t even know anything about the state except the stereotypes you’ve heard from other people.
Seattle’s population is around 573,911.
Oklahoma City’s population is around 537,734.
There’s not a huge difference there population wise. I’ve been to Seattle I wasn’t all that impressed. It was an okay place, but to act like it’s better than anywhere else in the country? It’s not. In my opinion Seattle, New York, L.A. or Chicago where I currently live are no better than anywhere else in the country. I’ve been to all of those places and they didn’t offer me anything that made me think that they were any more special than Cheyenne, Wyoming or Katy, Texas or Hays, Kansas or even the smallest town in Oklahoma. Why can’t people just respect other people and places for what they are instead of always trying to tear them down to make yourself feel better. You look really stupid when you do that. For the guy from Denver who said that Oklahoma was just a bunch of hillbilly rednecks or whatever…really?!? Have you been around the rest of the Denver area much? My wife is from Denver so we visit all the time and I’ve seen plenty of people who would fit your “hillbilly redneck” moniker. I live in Chicago now and there are plenty of people here that fit that too. There are those types of people in every state. There are also very smart and intelligent people in every state. You all sound very ignorant with your stupid little jabs at Oklahoma, none of which really make any sense.
I personally think that it is the coolest name OKC could have chosen. First off, we can now call the Ford Center the “Thunderdome” which is the coolestt name for the stadium. second, we could play “thunderstruck” by AC/DC before every game. If you get some good lights then it would be the most epic intro in the NBA.
Seattle has a metro population of over 4 million, compared to 1.2 million for OKC. So there’s a bit of a difference
Thunder is a terrible name… and any NBA team should end with an “s”. I like Outlaws, I even wouldn’t mind Scissortails. If they do pick Thunder though, they better have some kick-butt colors and logo, as well as a mascott, because having a “Cumulous cloud” for a mascott would be such a pitty.

site(s) will be up soon!
Just think how lucky we are to see the Great Kobe Bryant. He will shine!!!!
They probably think it sounds very modern or whatever, but I think it sounds like a bloody Arena Football team name.
Who is they? Refering to they think it is a modern or cool name. I live in OKC and think the name will work. Is it my pick, probably not, but we can live with it.
I’m not a fan of the NBA but I did vote for the upgrades to the Ford Center. My motivation was for OSU and OU basketball/ NCAA events.
Those that say “we” stole the team apparently don’t know anything about sports business. Seattle fumbled the ball and we simply picked it up and scored.
Sounds like a WNBA name.
Why is it when big money and big success comes around a bunch of Okies get all ignorant and get a bunch of really smart people to make a stupid decision..
OKLAHOMA CITY OUTLAWS!!!
This is the WILD WILD WEST, Oklahoma is cowboys, trainrobbers and gunfights, and now were the THUNDER??
That is the most embarressing thing ever..look at the poll results..omg..why didnt they let us vote on it instead of some overpriced undereducated marketing guru who wanted to be PC and not call someone a felon..deal with it, this is Oklahoma City, boomtown, landrun city america, gunfights and outlaws are just as much a part of our history and the freaking weather..what a joke!!!!
I personally like the name and the colors, however I must admit the logo needs some work. After reading some of the posts on this forum it doesn’t surprise me to see intellectually dishonest people posting their opinions about Oklahoma. All I can say from experience is that higher population doesn’t equate people being more intellectual, more refined, and living happier lives. I have traveled and visited most of the big cities in our country and parts of western Europe and I can tell you Oklahoma is a great place to live and raise a family for many reasons, and we just found 1 more! GO SOONERS, GO THUNDER!
I agree with the bison as a mascot. Think about it, when bison trample across the Oklahoma landscape, IT SOUNDS LIKE THUNDER. I think thats cool in my opinion….
The name is a travesty and insult to professional sports. If I lived in OKC, my excitement of finally getting a pro franchise would be extremely tempered.
I think all this complaining and whining is rediculous! First of all, WHO CARES what the name is! Seriously! There are a lot of stupid names in all sports if you think about it, but after a while, they grow on you and it becomes second nature without thinking about it.
Then Ok…for all you Seatle folk…obveously your oppinion and support do not matter that much because you couldn’t keep the team in Seatle to begin with. I’m not saying that OKC can either…only time will tell. But it sounds to me most of you are just sore losers because you lost a dying team with absolutely no support. How embarrassing will it be for your city when the “Thunder” have been in OKC for many years and Seatle still hasn’t got a team?
Worst. Logo. Ever.
OKC has just stolen Wichita’s Thunder. Thanks for the slap in the face to the People of the City of Wichita.
How about the Oklahoma City Incest?
I too wish our NBA team had been given a better name; I liked the Lightning Bolts, which strikes suddenly and with a deadly aftermath. That said, worse names could’ve been chosen. In time, Thunder will be as accepted as the name SuperSonics.
As far as trashing Oklahoma, I’d bet 99% of those doing so have never set a foot inside the state. They don’t know anything about the culture, lifestyles, geography, or anything else. They only know the sterotype the media promotes. Anyone living in mid-America are not the love of the east and west coasts and are basically ignorant of the heartland. I’d wager Oklahomans know more about any of those states than what they know about Oklahoma. I bet they don’t know we have 5 mountain ranges, hundreds of lakes, desert, or that forests cover a quarter of the state. We have kayaking, boating, mountain climbing, water falls, running rivers, skiing, resorts–you name it and, other than snow skiing and surfing, we have it. I extend a hearty welcome to one and all to see what our state is like for themselves.
The name would have sold OK except for the bad logo design. Those colors together are totally sissy. I am not sure how many proofs / renderings they had to chose from, but obviously not enough…
BTW, like it or not, names, logos, colors, the look, ALL matter in this day and age in trying to sell a new sports franchise (or a repackaged old one) Anyone in advertising knows how fickled, emotional, and competitive today’s consumer is. Heck, I am no different. I was prepared to shell out big bucks for good season tickets, and now my enthusiasm took a hit…
Reading this has totally irritated me.
Anyone from Seattle complaining has no basis. I really like reading everyone’s spelling blunders. The best part for me is reading how everyone knocks Oklahoma and says that it’s a ‘redneck’ state, yet they misspell three or four words per line. And to the person who suggested the OKC Incest… you’ve never been here. I would almost guarantee it. Growing up in Sausalito, Ca (just about the most affluent area in all of the US)and moving to OKC, Ok,(stereotypically NOT) I’ve noticed many differences. However, lack of education is definitely not one of them. The OKC Thunder is a perfectly fine name. If you want to talk about dumb sports names, there are plenty. How about the Heat, Raptors, Hornets, Nuggets, Jazz, etc. Thunder is most definitely not as bad! So, to all of you from the east coast, you can suck each others pretentious pricks all night long. Oklahoma!!
im not from oklahoma but i’ve been a huge NBA fan since – forever! and I, like everyone else, couldn’t wait to see this new logo.. it’s a shambles!
the ‘holding’ page had blacks and a gold/yellow and white…why not use that colour scheme?
it’s too bright…like the team has had a major sponsor from Ronald McDonald himself!
Thunder? what were they thinking. the logo looks nothing like one that will go down in history. it just doesn’t have any ring to it. Doesn’t sound intimidating either.
I imagined the holding page to be an indicator of the final logo only to be proved wrong. I’m in the design business and it’s embarrassing to see stuff like this being produced. It’s clear to say that like a salesman at a door trying to sell you rubbish, no matter what spin they put on it, it’s still rubbish and the public can see that. They cudda made a basketball out of the O, K and C…
or used a word that would instill fear into opponents!
all they need now is Usain BOLT to be their mascott…
I really do not like the name thunder. What about the Barons or the Marshalls… either of those would have been way better in my opinion… The thunder sounds like the name of a WNBA team and their jerseys look like something lisa leslie would wear… got OKC you could have done waaaaaaay better than the thunder.. just my opinion though
I think the name Thunder is a fine name. It is the name of OUR Hockey Team in Wichita and should not be used by such a close neighbor. Incidently, I have no problem with the people of Oklahoma. I live only 33 miles from the state line in Kansas. Whoever came up with this name was not thinking about their neighbors to the north! Our minor league hockey team DOES play the OKC minor league hockey team in the Ford Arena. Now how is that going to sit with the fans on both sides? To the owners of this NBA team: Get your own original name, don’t use ours!!!!
What is wrong with you people?
It’s a noise.
How do you come up with a logo or mascot for that?
Ka-chicka! Ka-chicka!
What is wrong with everyone? Having an NBA team in Oklahoma is HUGE!! We all need to be supportive and just get over the name. Our state’s known for its crazy weather, so I think the name represents our state well. Hey look at it this way, at least we dont have a gay name like “The Wizards” or “The Magic”. It could be a lot worse. Hey, what the hell’s a “Supersonic” anyway??
You Oklahomans sure are a sensitive lot.
You’re in the big leagues now. Fans from all over the US are going to trash talk your team and your city. Best get used to it.
The Oklahoma City Thunder sounds like a minor-league franchise. 41 years ago Seattle came up with the SuperSonics and that was cool all the way back in 1967. Lets see Muhammed Ali was in his prime and Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy was still alive. Here in 2008 thay can’t come up with a better name than that with all this technology and so called brain power we have today. Just like they can’t make a sitcom any more they are showing they have an even harder time coming up with a cool nickname. The Oklahoma City Dunkadlics now thats cool, hip, and more importantly unique in 2008.
“Supersonic” refers to supersonic jets because of Boeing being in Seattle which has long been a center of the air industry. Don’t bash the name if you have no idea what you’re talking about. “Thunder” on the other hand is completely generic and sounds amateurish. Not to mention the logo is a total disgrace as any unbiased sports fan will attest.
i hate it because of the colors and i wish that they have pick……….
Oklahoma City Lighting
You mean Oklahoma City Lighting and Fixture?
I think there already is one of those.
Go Pistons!!!
Ross
With all the gay talk, it sounds like you might be a little confused sexually. I live in OKC, and it’s a wonderful place to live. When the Hornets got here after Katrina, the sucked, but during their time here they became a playoff caliber team, and alot of that came from fan support HERE. Most of the Hornet players, and even Byron Scott still own a home here, because the love it here, and they will tell you so. Just remember if Seattle had supported the team while it was there, it would still be there. Go Thunder.
LOL sounds like we have a roller derby team now
I THINK ITS JUST GREAT THAT WE HAVE AN NBA TEAM THAT WE CAN CALL OUR OWN. IT WOULDNT MATTER TO ME IF THEY WERE CALLED THE OKLAHOMA CITY TALL GUYS. BUT THE THUNDER IT IS SO ITS THE THUNDER I’M GOING TO SUPPORT! GROW UP PEOPLE…
1-7!!!! HAHAHAHAHA
look what you got thank you for taking them off our hands they suck even worse then before and the name sucks have fun watching them lose every game i bet they will win under ten games all season
Hahaha! OKC Thunder… Definitely should be OKC snatchers sense you never earned an NBA team but stole it from another city. I’m going to enjoy watching OKC’s humiliation over the next few years. Your team will lose and get worse as you won’t be able to attract or retain really good players to Oklahoma. Who would want to live there? Most of todays NBA players are black and raising black kids in Oklahoma? Come on…be serious, I’ve been there and there are still some very nasty people calling the area home. The few good players OKC can afford to pay for won’t live there year round, but will keep their family and thus their money in better places. Not trying to be mean as I know there are great people in OKC, but you are not a world class city like Seattle and won’t be anytime soon. Oh sure you can play like you are in the big time and have one professional team franchise and get mentioned from time to time on TV. But let me be frank to all you bashers in OKC that have the nerve to say stupid things about Seattle. Here’s the facts, Seattle would be a world class city without any professional sports team and it has earned that designation and reputation not from any sports teams but by it’s people, history, legacy and accomplishments like Costco, Starbucks, Microsoft, Boeing, UPS and many more industries that launched here raising our profile. One thing we aren’t known for is trying to buy our way into being noticed, we earn it from our hard work attracting great people to our city who help built a great city/community that gets noticed around the country and the world. Oklahoma actually has such a city, it’s called Tulsa!
You are all crazy! I used to live in Oklahoma, beautiful place, great for any race to live. And of course the Thunder is gonna suck for a couple of years just like any other expansion team. I think the name is pretty good compared to the Jazz, Spurs, Pistons, SUPERSONICS and every other ridiculous name the NBA has. Thunder only sounds bad because you arent used to it yet. Ive also lived in Seattle, also a great place, well if you like constant cloudcover, rain, mudslides, seals, and constant power outages. And it isnt like OK NEEDS a pro team, they have Sooner Football, which is more entertaining than any pro team of any sport.
Here’s the deal people. I was born in this city and raised in this city. I take pride in being and Oklahoman, and anyone else who says they do also should get over the name, the colors, the logo… If you don’t like it, root for some other team, but don’t call yourself an Oklahoman. The fact that this state has a professional team now is HUGE. Support them, sport them, or shut up! To those who are bitter from Seattle. Maybe you should have done for the SuperSonics what we are doing for our Thunder. Yes we have won only 5 games, but we are a new team! Give us some time. I find it interesting that even though we aren’t doing well, the citizens of Oklahoma show up every game with most of the seats full, and the energy at the Ford center is incredible! I’m there every game, behind the scenes, and I love it. As far as our neighbors to the north.. GET OVER YOURSELVES! It’s minor league hockey! And this is coming from an avid Blazers fan. So for all Thunder bashers, shut up and grow up. Be proud of what our city has done. And for those who support our guys, KEEP IT UP!!!!!
stupidest name since “Raptors”…
OKC Snatchers…LOVE IT!! Clay Bennett is the king of douchebags. Thanks for stealing our team.
LOL, I came to this thread from another site talking about how people were bitching about this last year and I see people whining THIS year too! Dwell much? Enjoy your rain while we enjoy our basketball team XD
I’m a Trailblazer’s fan and I miss the SuperSonics.
I used to go see the Blazers and the Sonics play at Rip City all the time when I was growing up, and when I visited my family in Washington I would get to see Blazers and Sonics play up there. The OKC thunder… just doesn’t feel right. 40 Years of history, uprooted and moved from it’s home by that vile male Clay Bennett.
And to all you people insulting Seattle: Shut up. Seattle is a beautiful city, it’s one of my favorite places that I’ve ever visited, and I’ve been all over this country. And the SuperSonics is a fine name, and at least it was creative. Thunder is just so bland. I don’t hate OKC, and I don’t hate the team. (I don’t think much about the logo/name though.) But don’t think for a second that the Seattle fans deserved this. Clay Bennett purposefully drove that team into the ground so he could move it easier.
I think the name of the oklahoma city arena should be called the thunder dome that sounds great having a dome over our own okla city thunder! go Thunder 2011
